Skateboard Photographers – Jetro Stavén

Where are you located/living?

Hyvinkää, Finland. About 50 minutes away from the capital city.

Age and how long have you been involved with photography?

I am 23 years old and have photographed about 6 years.

What type of cameras do you shoot with?

Canon 5D mark2 (for video and still) and Canon 5D + few quality lenses, flashes etc. I also have a couple of film cameras.

Ermil Terehov - BS Ollie

Favourite photography accessory, other than your camera?

Radiotriggers, I need them always. They are always in my bag. Even when I go to buy grocery.

If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?

Canon 24-70 2.8L – Best all-around lens for my type of photography. Has a bit wide angle and a bit zoom too.

What makes a skate photograph original and unique: basically what is your idea of a good photo?

In my opinion a good skate photograph is a well balanced combination of the trick, the skater, the milieu/spot and all the technical aspects (angle, light, colors etc).

Name the first photographer that comes to your mind and why?

Pasi Salminen. He has been on my mind for this whole interview. Almost my whole life actually.. Been a fan of his work since I started to skate.

What do you feel is the most challenging thing about skateboard photography?

Maybe the most challenging part for me is to get new ideas and find new angles for the photos. When I´m shooting, I always try to turn down the first idea that comes in to my mind.

Any references you may have (past and present photography work) and/or your relation to skateboarding

I have been skateboarding for a decade and photographed skateboarding more or less active maybe half of that. I am currently studying photography in Pekka Halonen Academy, still have a year left. I have done a lot of photography work, also for my living – commercial shots, photojournalism, event/documentary photography, band promos, music gigs, portraits etc. I have also been an assistant to a photographer and a newspaper reporter for a while.
