Skateboard Photographer Jonathan Hay

Jonathan Hay

I’ve been trying to get Jonathan Hay – the man behind Confusion Magazine – to get his answers to these simple questions and some of his photos sent over for around a year now and we finally got his member page! Can’t wait for us to get his detailed interview done for the book, I better go and visit him and stay until we’re done :) Good to have Jonathan in the project, he’s made a huge impression on the DIY magazine scene worldwide so let’s support him as well!

If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?

I would like to say a 24-70mm but if I could only have one lens for skate photography I would go with the trusty 16mm fisheye. I like to try to get as close as possible to the action, although I’m getting more and more into the long shot.

What makes a skate photograph original and unique: basically what is your idea of a good photo?

A photograph that can stand alone as an captivating landscape photograph and then with the additional element of a skater co-occupying this space, you end up with a really great image.

Name the first photographer that comes to your mind and why?

Henri Cartier-Bresson for contemplating the “decisive moment”.

Josh Mattson Buena corner

What do you feel is the most challenging thing about skateboard photography?

Not getting hit in the head by fly away skateboards and actually taking the camera out of the bag in a variety of sometimes uncomfortable situations, especially in the “olden days”, when not everyone was a skateboard photographer.

References you have (past and present photography work) and your relation to skateboarding
